Urban Systems Science
Our vision is a network of academic-regional partnerships across the globe with focus on urban
Cities worldwide are engines of growth, profoundly affecting ecology of the Earth. Sustaining even modest rates of growth in population, economy and living standards with overall concentration in cities, poses the greatest long-term challenge for humanity. How are cities to develop and be managed into the 21st century? The basic thesis here is that a new type of systems science is needed to address these challenges. Academic institutions are called upon to establish a systems science as a basis for providing solutions and alternative directions for urban growth. KTH is in a unique position to lead urban systems science development together with its industrial and regional partners. Development and management of cities is a global as much as a regional challenge.
